A1, A2 and A explained

A1 covers light motorcycles up to 11 kW and 125 cc, from age 16. A2 covers mid-power motorcycles up to 35 kW with a power-to-weight ratio of at most 0.2 kW/kg, from age 18. A is unrestricted, from age 24.

You can also reach A at 20 if you've held A2 for at least two years — but this upgrade still requires passing a new riding test, even though you don't repeat the theory test or risk training.
